Nanda Devi East, standing at 7,434 meters, is the elegant eastern summit of the revered Nanda Devi massif in Uttarakhand. Often regarded as the “twin peak” of Nanda Devi, it holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, symbolizing the divine presence of Goddess Nanda. The mountain rises dramatically above the Johar Valley, forming a striking counterpart to the main peak.
Together, Nanda Devi and Nanda Devi East help shape the magnificent Nanda Devi Sanctuary —a natural amphitheater of high Himalayan walls, glaciers, and untouched alpine ecosystems. This remote and rugged region is among the most pristine in the Himalayas, protected for both its ecological sensitivity and cultural heritage.
The surrounding Nanda Devi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shelters rare flora, wildlife, and fragile high-altitude landscapes. Although the inner sanctuary remains restricted due to conservation concerns, the allure of Nanda Devi East endures. Its challenging approach, majestic form, and spiritual legacy continue to inspire mountaineers, trekkers, and pilgrims, representing both the grandeur of the Himalayas and the need to preserve their delicate wilderness.

BEFORE YOU ENQUIRE
Nanda Devi East is considered a highly demanding expedition. It involves steep snow slopes, glacier travel, technical sections, and high-altitude exposure. Prior mountaineering experience is essential.
Yes. You must be comfortable using crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and fixed ropes. Basic knowledge of knots, self-arrest, and roped glacier travel is necessary before joining the expedition.
The ideal climbing windows are May–June and September–October, when the weather is most stable and snow conditions are favorable.
Nanda Devi East, also known as Sunanda Devi, rises to 7,434 meters —making it one of the prominent peaks of the Nanda Devi massif.
The journey typically begins in Munsyari, a picturesque Himalayan town in Uttarakhand that acts as the gateway to the Johar Valley.
A full Nanda Devi East expedition generally requires 18 to 20 days, including acclimatization and summit rotations.
